🌱 Gov. Cooper Seeks GA Music Fest + Company Turns Waste To Nutrients

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Hey, everybody! It's me, Alexis Goring, your host of the Daily. Come along for everything you need to know about what's going on around town...

First, today's weather:

A stray afternoon t-storm. High: 96 Low: 75.

Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. The City of Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College are now in partnership for workforce development and education. According to the city government, "the partnership will provide better access to education, job training, career counseling and more for city employees and Central Piedmont students. For employees who do not currently hold post-secondary credentials, the city will pre-pay tuition and associated fees at Central Piedmont toward an associate degree or certificate programs. By offering a pre-payment program, the partnership is promoting upward mobility and removing a financial barrier." (charlottenc.gov)
  2. Brunch is what weekends are made of for most Americans. According to a survey by General Mills Foodservice, "it's a meal 75% of people in the U.S. were looking forward to enjoying again once restaurants reopened during the pandemic." Midnight Milligan Brewing in Charlotte is experiencing that firsthand. "We're much busier than we initially were when we first started," said co-owner Joe Baumgartner. His restaurant started serving brunch on June 12 and it has seen a big response from people who love to eat brunch — so much so that the restaurant decided to serve brunch on Saturdays too. (Spectrum News)
  3. Governor Roy Cooper is trying to bring a popular music festival to North Carolina. According to WCNC, "Cooper tweeted that North Carolina is ready to welcome Music Midtown to the state saying he could ensure a "fun and safe" festival. Organizers on Monday posted that "due to circumstances beyond our control" they would no longer be hosting the event. The website said that ticket holders would receive refunds in the next 24 hours. A possible reason for the cancelation points to Music Midtown's weapons policy that bans weapons "of any kind," conflicting with Georgia's gun laws." (WCNC.com)
  4. The city of Charlotte reported that "more than 280,000 tons of organic waste is tossed into the trash each year. Only about 20% of the waste is recycled into compost." But now there is a solution: Crown Town Compost is a program that turns waste into nutrients! According to Spectrum News, the program works like this: "Clients use biodegradable trash bags they put food waste into. Then the crews at Crown Town Compost pick it up, take it to the farm and let it mature for at least 6 months. That's when clients in the program receive bags of soil. A finished product that earned them a spot at the Charlotte Innovation barn." (Spectrum News)
  5. Doctors have predicted that there will be a continual rise in COVID-19 cases as the summer continues. According to WCNC, "Several Charlotte-area counties have shifted into the CDC's "high" community COVID-19 level, including Mecklenburg, Union, Rowan and Iredell. Health experts are pushing the same protective measures we've been using all along. Several Charlotte-area counties have shifted into the CDC's "high" community COVID-19 level, including Mecklenburg." (WCNC.com)
