Government Shutdown: Here's What North Carolina Has At Stake

A new study takes a look at the impact, from the number of state jobs in NC to the percentage of kids covered by CHIP.

As lawmakers in the nation's capital struggle to find compromise, the government shutdown entered its third day on Monday. The impasse means non-essential federal employees were not at work and some government services were halted, although a vote on whether to reopen the government was slated for late Monday morning.

But how much is North Carolina affected? Consumer finance site WalletHub took a look at all 50 states to determine how much each is impacted by the shutdown, considering factors like each state's share of federal jobs and contracts to the percentage of kids covered by the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

According to the rankings, North Carolina is the ninth least-affected state overall. With No. 1 being most affected and 25 being average, North Carolina also ranked fairly low when it comes to the following:

  • 31st - Share of Federal Jobs
  • 45th - Federal Contract Dollars Per Capita
  • 35th - Small Business Lending Per Capita
  • 38th - Real Estate as a Percentage of GSP
  • 37th - Access to National Parks
  • 21st - % of Children under CHIP

As you might expect, Washington, D.C. was the most affected state. Minnesota was the least affected state overall, followed closely by Michigan and Indiana.
