Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:
- Sunday, there were problems at Charlotte Douglas International Airport with over 270 flights delayed and dozens more are canceled. "About 166 of these are American Airlines flights, with another 64 of the flights being run by PSA Airlines, an American Airlines subsidiary. American Airlines told WCNC Charlotte that the delays are cancellations are due to storms expected Sunday afternoon and evening," according to WCNC. (WCNC.com)
- Five film projects are expected to take place in Charlotte this year and one of them will be made for Hallmark. "North Carolina film productions have ramped up since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. … A build-up of post-quarantine content demand combined with easygoing film conditions and a reliable workforce, plus enticing tax incentives, made North Carolina a hot destination for production companies in 2021. Industry leaders are striving to keep the momentum going. This made-for-TV Hallmark movie is shooting in and around Rowan and Mecklenburg counties," according to Axios Charlotte. (Axios Charlotte)
- "Camino Health Center, a well-known non-profit in the Charlotte area said its food pantry has been deemed unusable after being ravaged by a building fire on July 4. In a Facebook post, the non-profit said an unexpected fire at their facility caused serious damage and flooding and that the food pantry is located in the building where the fire occurred," according to WCNC. Last year, Camino Health Center's food pharmacy helped nearly 10,000 people. (WCNC.com)
- Rachel Bestman, a Charlotte resident, recently purchased a Hyundai Elantra. However, one day, she noticed that her vehicle was not where she parked it. "She was informed that her car was towed after it was found at the exit of another apartment complex a few blocks from where she lives," according to Insider. She later learned of the "Kia Challenge," which has been going viral on social media. She now believes she is a victim of a social media competition. Viral "Kia Challenge" videos posted to TikTok and YouTube have led to an increase in car thefts around the country." (Insider)
- As North Carolina prepares for the November election, advocates are planning to make sure voting is accessible for everyone. "Casting a ballot is supposed to be a smooth, easy process. However, for some, it can be quite the opposite. Bentley has cerebral palsy and votes curbside. When she pulled up to her precinct in the last election, she said a poll worker questioned whether she had a disability...incidents like these and barriers at the polls happen more often than many realize," according to WCNC.
