Written by Lin Manuel-Miranda, "Hamilton" is based on the 2004 biography "Alexander Hamilton," by historian Ron Chernow and incorporates hip-hop, jazz and R&B along with more traditional musical numbers to tell the story of the American founding father.

The show opened on Broadway in August 2015 and would go on to win 11 Tony Awards, out of a record 16 nominations, including Best Musical, and took the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

An immigrant from the West Indies, Hamilton became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the young country's first treasury secretary. Promotional material bills the wildly popular show as "the story of America then, as told by America now."
