Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:
- Atrium Health will host flu shot clinics Oct. 1 and Oct. 15 at primary care practices across the Charlotte area. "Health officials in Charlotte are urging people to get their flu shots ahead of what they expect to be a potentially severe flu season. The CDC says the best time to get your flu shot is by the end of October so you'll be protected when the flu is at peak spread," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
- On Sept. 22, "student-athletes traveled to Niner Elementary to participate in a field day with the students. It was a fun day of games and activities that was enjoyed by both the kids and the athletes. It was also another great opportunity for Charlotte's student-athletes to volunteer within the greater Charlotte community. ... Charlotte's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) plans many community service activities as a way for student-athletes to be active within their community and help enhance the overall student-athlete experience," according to Charlotte Athletics. - Whistleblowers are telling on Charlotte community health center. Heather"Piper and a second former employee, James Wankel, spoke with WBTV to detail what they say are serious financial concerns in the health center’s operation. Allegations from the pair of whistleblowers include poor patient recordkeeping, billing practices that led to patients being over-charged for services they should have received for free or at minimal cost, improper administration of grant funding and internal financial controls that did not align with generally accepted accounting principle," WBTV reports. (WBTV)
- If you love built-to-order salads, then this news is for you! "Salata Salad Kitchen, a leading built-to-order salad kitchen, will celebrate the grand opening of its second location in Charlotte on October 13 with two days of celebrations, including a bootcamp with Charlotte wellness influencer Emily Breeze and retired NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss, followed by a day of giveaways and charitable givebacks and more. The 2,400-square-foot location will open at 9825 Sandy Rock Pl., Suite 5B, in Rea Farms. It will offer online ordering through its app with both pickup and delivery available for fans on the go, as well as dine-in and catering," QSR Magazine reports. (QSR magazine)
- "The Mecklenburg County District Attorney is addressing a system error that led to the dismissal of 16,000 charges. Spencer B. Merriweather III tells WCCB that his office is working to reinstate those charges after his office became aware of the computer error last week. Merriweather says the problem occurred while his office is working to prioritize cases of a more serious nature. The District Attorney’s Office engaged in a process with the N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) last month to dismiss a number of low priority traffic and low-level misdemeanor cases, allowing prosecutors to focus resources on more serious traffic and misdemeanor matters. As soon as the computer error was detected, the DA’s Office took immediate action to halt the process, and the office has had AOC’s full support and cooperation in resolving this matter," WCCB Charlotte reports.
