Here's How N.C. Representatives Voted On The GOP Tax Bill

CHARLOTTE, NC — The U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of the GOP tax overhaul bill Thursday, pushing forward one of the party's top priorities. However, the bill is still far from becoming law — the Senate still has it's own version of the legislation to pass, which may be a more difficult lift.

North Carolina representatives largely voted along party lines with Democrats voting against and Republicans for the bill, except for one lawmaker. Eastern North Carolina’s Rep. Walter Jones, a Republican from the 3rd District that stretches from the Outer Banks to Wilmington, voted against the sweeping tax law changes, saying he was concerned about the impact on his district’s economy.

“I’m all for tax reform, but it must grow the economy, not the debt. Unfortunately, the tax bill voted on today would be financed not by cutting spending elsewhere in the budget, but by adding up to $2 trillion to America’s debt,” Jones said in a statement Nov. 16. “In fact, in just five years, it is estimated that more than 20 percent of Americans would be paying more in federal taxes as a result of this bill. That is the last thing struggling American families need.

Even if the Senate manages to pass a bill, the two house of Congress would have reconcile the differences between their two bills. Once Congress agrees on a final version of the legislation, the president can then veto or sign it into law.
