North Carolina’s congressional delegation split its vote along party lines in the historic vote Wednesday on the first and second articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump.

The House voted mainly among party lines to impeach the president, for abuse of power (230-197) and obstruction of Congress (229-198). No Republicans voted for the articles and two Democrats voted against impeachment. Michigan Congressman Justit joined the Democrats

Here’s what some members of the North Carolina delegation representing districts in the Charlotte area had to say today about the historic vote:

  • “After reviewing hours of testimony, countless pieces of evidence, and the Administration’s own words and actions, I believe the case has been made that the President abused his power and obstructed Congress from fulfilling its constitutional duty. As such, I will support both articles of impeachment today on the House floor,” said Adams, a Democrat who represents the Charlotte area.
  • “I’m voting against impeaching President @realDonaldTrump today for a very simple reason: House Democrats didn’t prove their case,” tweeted Budd, a Republican who represents the district north of Charlotte.
  • Rather than pursing the priorities of the American people, House Democrats have spent the last year focused on removing President Trump from office, said McHenry, a Republican who represents a district west of Charlotte. “As evidence of this choice, look no further than the fact that more subpoenas have been issued than bills have been signed into law.”
  • “Washington Democrats just passed two articles of impeachment with zero evidence President Donald Trump committed a crime or an impeachable offense,” said Hudson, a Republican who represents the district east of Charlotte.

Last week, a bitterly divided House Judiciary Committee approved two articles of impeachment accusing President Donald Trump of abusing the power of his office and obstructing Congress.

The action came after a parade of witnesses corroborated a whistleblower’s complaint that Trump held up congressionally approved military aid to Ukraine in exchange for an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden, a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination, and his son Hunter. The investigation never occurred, and the aid eventually was released.

The Senate is set to hold a trial on the articles of impeachment beginning in January.
