Investigation Underway After Construction Worker's Fatal Fall

Juventino Mata-Hernandez, 24, was killed Wednesday afternoon when he fell from a building under construction in Uptown.

CHARLOTTE, NC — An investigation is underway into what caused a 24-year-old construction worker to fall to his death Wednesday afternoon at a construction site in uptown Charlotte, according to police.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said they received a call shortly before 4 p.m. that worker Juventino Mata-Hernandez fell from a building under construction in the 600 block of South Tryon Street in Charlotte.

Initial reports indicate Mata-Hernandez fell out of a construction elevator when it was at the 19th floor of the building, CMPD said Thursday.

Medic responded to the construction site and Mata-Hernandez was pronounced dead on the scene, CMPD said.

CMPD detectives on the scene interviewed witnesses as part of an ongoing death investigation. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will also be conducting a separate investigation.

The building under construction is a 33-story office building at the location of the former Charlotte Observer building, WBTV reported. The new building is expected to open in early 2019.
