Investigation Underway After Man Dies In Motorcycle Crash

Zachary William Brown Mackinnon was killed when the Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was driving crashed on N. Brevard Street.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte police suspect a 26-year-old man was speeding and impaired when the motorcycle he was driving crashed and flipped, killing him.

The single vehicle crash occurred shortly after 10 p.m. April 17 along North Brevard Street near Parkwood Avenue, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

CMPD officers responded to the scene, where they located Zachary William Brown Mackinnon, and the 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle he had been driving. Mackinnon was transported by medic to an area hospital with life-threatening injures.

On Sunday, shortly after 3:30 p.m., Mackinnon was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries, police said.

"The preliminary investigation has revealed that the Harley-Davidson was traveling southwest on N. Brevard Street when it ran off the roadway after entering the curve just prior to Parkwood Avenue," CMPD said. After the motorcycle left the road, it hit a bush, which caused Mackinnon to lose control and overturn, the report said.

"The victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Both speed and alcohol use are believed to be contributing factors in this incident," CMPD said.
