🌱 Junk Removal Services For Residents + Caregivers Quitting Jobs

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Hello, people of Charlotte! It's me again, Alexis Goring, your host of the Charlotte Daily.

First, today's weather:

Record-tying heat. High: 95 Low: 71.

Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:

  1. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a fatality as a homicide. The death took place on May 4 near the 6300 block of Countryside Drive after officers responded to an assault call. The victim, Edgardo Rafael Reyes Mejia, died. On May 19, the case was declared a homicide. (WBTV)
  2. General Manager of the Charlotte Hornets, Mitch Kupchak, recently signed a multiyear contract extension to keep his job. Kupchak's contract was set to expire this summer. He will continue to lead the team's search for a coach. (ESPN)
  3. Christine Griffin is 81 and has dementia. She and her husband John still live on their own in their Charlotte home but need some help every day. Their daughter, Anne Schmitt, is their caregiver. Elderly people are increasingly choosing to stay at home rather than move into a nursing home or assisted living facility. This choice is affecting the workforce. According to a Harvard Business report, 40% of people are quitting their jobs so they can care for an older loved one because getting help is so expensive. (WCNC.com)
  4. Two Charlotte business owners, Hamzeh Jamal Alasfar and Tayseer Issam Alkhayyat, are facing federal charges for allegedly selling fraudulently obtained Apple iPhones and other electronic devices to domestic and international buyers. They are charged with conspiracy to transport stolen and fraudulently obtained goods in interstate commerce, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine and two counts of interstate and foreign transportation of stolen property, which carry a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a $250,000 fine per count. (Department of Justice)
  5. Junk Rescue, a company based in Charlotte, is now open for business. It offers junk removal services to residents of Charlotte and neighboring areas. The employees at Junk Rescue are ready to provide various kinds of services: junk removal, dumpster rental and recycling services. (Digital Journal)
