Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. According to WCNC, "the Charlotte Knights have announced the team’s 2023 full schedule of games and opponents Monday. Truist Field, the home of the Charlotte Knights since 2014, will also celebrate its 10th year in existence in 2023 and ninth season of Knights Baseball. The team announced that the 2023 Triple-A schedule will feature 150 games and the Knights will once again host 75 home games in Uptown Charlotte." (WCNC.com)
  2. Black-owned restaurants were hit hard during pandemic. According to University of Washington, "during the first year of the pandemic and amid protests for racial justice following the murder of George Floyd, tech companies such as Google, Yelp and DoorDash started “Black-owned” labelling campaigns to encourage customer support for restaurants and other businesses. But new research, using cellphone location data, shows that visits to restaurants that identify as Black-owned, compared to those without a label, dropped off after some initial spikes and were inconsistent across 20 U.S cities." (University of Washington)
  3. Did you know that if you don't safely pack your children's lunch, it can do more harm than good? According to WBTV, "Don Brizes is an associate professor at Johnson & Wales University. He laid out ways to pack a safe lunch for children. For instance, use fresh food purchased or made within five to seven days, including deli meat and leftovers. Old food kept past seven days can cause food-borne illness." (WBTV)
  4. According to PR Newswire, "Novant Health and Novant Health Foundation have invested $25.5 million in community impact and health equity initiatives across North Carolina, made possible by funding, clinical expertise and a range of strategic programs. Together, these initiatives are designed to improve the key drivers of health, including access to care, food, housing, transportation, technology and workforce training and development." Novant Health believes in "improving the health of our communities, one person at a time, by improving access to care, investing in the community and supporting economic mobility." (PR Newswire)
  5. Students across the Charlotte area returned to school Monday. Parents have something else to balance now: finding the time to be present for school activities. According to WCNC, "a trending Facebook post says there could be a legal allowance. The post claims that North Carolina workers can legally take four hours of unpaid leave from work to attend a school activity or participate at their child's school." (WCNC.com)
