CHARLOTTE, NC β€” Anyone who has ever dreamed of following an actual yellow brick road like Dorothy and the Tin Man will once again get a chance to do just that this year. Land of Oz, the small family-owned Wizard of Oz-based theme park in Beech Mountain, North Carolina, is only open for special events and has just released its upcoming schedule for 2020.

For many visitors, the history of the theme park is as much of a draw as the immersive movie schtick. Land of Oz opened in 1970, reportedly drawing visitors from all over the country. Actress Debbie Reynolds was on hand for the ribbon cutting, along with her daughter Carrie Fisher, according to the park's site.

While the park may be rooted in fantasy, the yellow brick road winding up Beech Mountain is definitely real. It's constructed of 44,000 actual yellow bricks, Travel and Leisure reported.

Returning this year are the park’s two cornerstone events, β€œJourney With Dorothy” and β€œAutumn At Oz.”

β€œWith Dorothy as your guide, you will find yourself skipping down the yellow brick road through the Land of Oz to help in her search for the wonderful Wizard during this one-of-a-kind interactive experience,” the park says of its β€œJourney With Dorothy” event. β€œAt Journey with Dorothy, you may be randomly selected to play one of your favorite characters as you are led through the original Land of Oz Park.”
