Living Well at Windsor Run
Windsor Run resident Nancy Armstrong works out in the new gym with guidance from Fitness Manager Jessica Sprague.

People who live in retirement communities are less lonely, more physically active, and more engaged than before they moved in, according to a June 2025 U.S. News & World Report survey.
This is especially true at Windsor Run, an Erickson Senior Living community in Matthews, N.C., where residents enjoy a wide array of social activities, wellness programs, dining options, and on-site health care that support their overall well-being.
The perfect fit

When Charlotte, N.C., residents Nancy and Fred Armstrong were exploring their senior living options, they were looking for a retirement community that would eliminate the responsibilities of homeownership and offer an abundance of amenities and activities.
"We had already downsized twice when we received an invitation to breakfast at Windsor Run," recalls Nancy. "While we were there, we were impressed with the landscaping; open outdoor spaces, like the ponds and dog parks; and the screened-in resident porches."

Since Fred has limited mobility, the couple was also drawn to the community's one-level homes, elevators, and climate-controlled walkways, which connect buildings on campus.
"Without a doubt, we knew this was where we wanted to be," says Nancy. "We had our name on the list at another community, but once we saw Windsor Run, there was no contest."
Active and engaged
With dozens of amenities, clubs, and activities, Windsor Run offers a multitude of ways to get involved.
Nancy, a certified yoga teacher, enjoys exercising at the fitness center. "Staying active has improved my health. It's what I call 'aging backward.' You can't add years to your life, but you can definitely add life to your years," she says.
Happy hours and concerts, held on the Woodland Commons patio and in the new Carolina Hall, are very popular.
Nature lovers enjoy strolling along the community's scenic walking paths, maintained by the Trail Friends Group. The Wood Chucks woodworking group has created benches and plant markers for the paths, among other projects.
Windsor Run also boasts two bocce courts, a community garden, and the new Carolina Courtyard, featuring a firepit that has quickly become a favorite gathering spot.
"It's so easy to meet people here," says Nancy. "You see people everywhere--at meals, walking down the hall, or heading to fitness classes. Everyone is kind and welcoming. You can't avoid making friends."
For Nancy and Fred, the convenience of these amenities makes all the difference. "Fred has everything he needs right here, even a pool and gym for exercise and physical therapy. We just open the door and walk straight onto the grass or to the gym," she says.
Other ways to connect
In addition to these amenities and activities, the Armstrongs find that dining at any of Windsor Run's seven restaurants is an easy way to meet new people.
"You meet people in the dining room, share stories, and before long, you've made new friends! It's that simple," says Nancy.
Eager to share the benefits of their new lifestyle with friends and family, Nancy and Fred invited a former neighbor to join them for dinner at the community.
"The experience made a big impact on him. He loved the experience [so much that he] now lives here at Windsor Run and is having a great time," says Nancy.
Worry-free living
Residents are able to maintain such busy, active calendars thanks to the community's worry-free lifestyle. Home maintenance, including appliance repair and replacement, is handled by the expert General Services team.
"Windsor Run offers us freedom that we wouldn't have had, had we stayed in our house. It's just so logical, at our ages," Nancy explains. "We no longer have to worry about utilities, internet costs, cable TV, IT support, yardwork, home maintenance, or HOA dues; it's all taken care of for us."
The couple also appreciates the peace of mind that Windsor Run's on-site medical care provides. They visit the medical center for physical exams, podiatry services, and routine check-ups. "It's a great advantage," says Nancy. "It's convenient and really meets our needs. It's just one more reason why we are so happy with our decision to move to Windsor Run."
All in one
For the Armstrongs, Windsor Run delivers the perfect blend of independence, community, and support.
With so much at their fingertips, "We don't need a pool in our backyard or a big house with a lot of room," says Nancy. "Windsor Run offers us so many opportunities to explore our interests, maintain our health, and socialize with our new neighbors."
She adds, "In our former house, we didn't see our neighbors often. Here, we see people all the time. That's special!"
