Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:

  1. Dorothy Price, a local author, wants to add more diversity to children's books. So, she wrote a new series of stories featuring diverse characters! According to WCNC, "Price was the winner of the "We Need Diverse Books" mentorship program. She grew up writing, having loved poetry and song since she was just 11 years old. After going to school for communications and working in television for a few years, Price realized she had an opportunity to do more. That's when she tinkered with the idea of becoming an author. She just finished a chapter book series for kids called "Jane's Big City Life," which hits stores this month." (WCNC.com)
  2. According to WRAL News, "a University of Tennessee at Knoxville student was on his way to Charlotte to finish up a summer internship. That's the last time anyone saw him before he went missing in a remote areas of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park near Cherokee." According to a Facebook post by his sister Analiese Evans, his car was found at a hiking trailhead in a "very remote part" of the park. (WRAL News)
  3. Bad news for North Carolina's beaches: Due to aging infrastructure, the water could be filled with bacteria! According to WCNC, "researchers at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead City said they are seeing more fecal matter indicator bacteria in ocean water. In Beaufort, nearly every high tide sends saltwater into the area's storm drains. The saltwater can overwhelm the system, especially after rain events. Other coastal towns are also seeing problems with stormwater and sewage drain systems filling with and being corroded by saltwater."(WCNC.com)
  4. According to the city government, "the Charlotte Fire Department is joining the U.S. Veterans Hall of Fame and its community partners (today) for the fourth-annual mental health awareness walk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, with nearly 46,000 deaths in 2020. The number of people who think about or attempt suicide is even higher." According to the U.S. Veterans Hall of Fame, "more than 22 veterans die by suicide daily." (charlottenc.gov)
  5. For several months now, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has been working to address "bike gangs" around various parts of the Queen City. According to WGHP Fox8 Greensboro, "over the weekend, CMPD conducted an operation, charging people in those groups with breaking the law. Some were juveniles, but at least one was an adult, Richard Flood. Flood showed Queen City News videos of interactions with officers and the public—an officer demanding they stop as they said they were heading home, a car going backward at a high rate of speed, and another stopping in the middle of the street. Flood said the actions of a few are painting everyone in a bad light." (WGHP FOX8 Greensboro)
