Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:
- "Manolo’s Bakery on Central Avenue continues to make a huge impact worlds away, one bite at a time. When the war in Ukraine began, it didn’t take long for the owner of Manolo’s Bakery to figure out how he could best help the people in need. Manolo’s Bakery immediately spearheaded a fundraising effort. And with the the help of local churches, nearly a million dollars was raised to help rebuild a bakery in Ukraine that was destroyed, then invaded by Russian soldiers during the war," WCCB Charlotte reports. (WCCB Charlotte)
- "Ryan Nagy went wire-to-wire at Cutter Creek Golf Club in Snow Hill to win the 29th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship finishing with a 7-under-par, 209 total. This is Nagy’s first CGA championship win after several years of playing and competing throughout the Carolinas. Nagy possessed a three-shot lead after the first round of competition and that lead was cut down to two shots coming into Thursday’s third and final round. A final round score of 2-over-par, 74 was more than enough to get it done for Nagy who ultimately won the championship by a staggering six shots," Amateur Golf reports. (AmateurGolf.com)
- "A judge decided not to set any bond for the man accused of shooting and killing CATS bus driver Ethan Rivera. The prosecutor laid out the day Ethan Rivera went to work as a CATS bus driver in February and was shot and killed while driving in uptown Charlotte. The prosecution also made the case that Darian Thavychith is a flight risk and danger to the community," WBTV reports. (WBTV)
- "Police arrested a Charlotte Department of Transportation employee after they said he used a city gas card to fill up personal vehicles. Corey Barnette, 50, was arrested on Thursday after police say he used the card for personal use for several months. Barnette was employed by CDOT at the time of the alleged crimes. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Barnette used a city gas card to fill up multiple personal vehicles at various gas stations across Charlotte from June 15 to Sept. 18. Barnette is accused of spending over $10,000 in unauthorized transactions," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
- "In the years ahead, climate change could bring real impacts to the leaf-peeping industry. The cycles of fall plants are complex, but our understanding of their response to climate change is growing. The timing and brilliance of fall colors are influenced by factors such as temperature, sun exposure and rainfall. According to Climate Central, any shifts disrupt the ecological and economic value linked to fall foliage. Here in North Carolina, the fall color season in the western mountains is the busiest tourist season for this area. ... Warming brought on by climate change can dull reds, oranges and yellows and delay the peak foliage period," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
