Here are the top three stories in Charlotte today:
- Several Charlotte brewery owners are collaborating in hopes of making the industry more inclusive through an internship program that will introduce new people to craft beer. Only 1% of breweries nationwide are Black-owned. The new program, which includes three breweries in the Charlotte region, is working to change that statistic by bringing on interns. They will teach the interns everything about the brewery business! It's an internship for people of color. (WCNC.com)
- Homicide and suicide rates among North Carolina children have more than doubled over the past decade. A recent report showed that in 2020, homicide was the leading cause of death among children from age 1 to 17. The report found that in 2020, 79 children between the ages of 1 and 17 died as a result of homicide, making it the leading cause of death for that age group. It was the second-leading cause of death among children aged 1 to 4. (Charlotte Observer)
- The average price of a gallon of regular gas in Charlotte is $4.10 per gallon on May 9 of this year. That's 44 cents higher than the previous 10-year high of $3.66 a gallon on May 9, 2012. Gas prices in Charlotte are 19.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. (WBTV)
