🌱 Local Doctor Writes Plant-Based Book + Pastor Runs For School Board

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Hello, hello! It's me, Alexis Goring, your host of the Charlotte Daily — back in your inbox with all the most important things happening in town. Let's do it.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and beautiful. High: 85 Low: 63.

Here are the top four stories in Charlotte today:

  1. Dr. Monique May, a Charlotte-based doctor, subscribed to a plant-based diet two years ago. She then decided to write a book in hopes of making it easier for others to change their diet to plant-based. According to Spectrum News, Dr. May "loves to spend time in the kitchen, and her cooking doesn't involve animal products. However, she admits she's not fully vegan, eating honey, fish and chicken ocassionally. May, a family medicine doctor with over 20 years of clinical experience, has been passionate about healthy eating for a while." (Spectrum News)
  2. Hamani Fisher, a pastor at Life Center International in Charlotte, is joining the race for school board. According to WCCB Charlotte, he is "running in District 1, the seat being vacated by long-time board member Rhonda Cheek. ... He says he's running to bring confidence, accountability and transparency to CMS." (WCCB Charlotte)
  3. StarMed Healthcare is offering testing and treatment to combat the spread of monkeypox virus. Testing is available for patients on location of StarMed's two family and urgent care clinics in Charlotte (FreeMore Clinic and Eastland Clinic). According to WCCB Charlotte, "Health officials say test results will be available usually in 24-72 hours. Through August 10, officials say there have been 10,392 cases of monkeypox in the United States, including 122 cases in North Carolina." (WCCB Charlotte)
  4. Charlotte Pride Festivities will start this weekend with the annual Interfaith Service. A week from now, the Charlotte Pride Festival & Parade will return to uptown as an in-person event. According to WCCB Charlotte, "Officials say celebrations will begin with the in-person return of the annual Charlotte Pride Interfaith Service on Sunday, August 14 at 4 p.m. at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, 1600 Norris Avenue. This unique event welcomes all LGBTQ people and allies to celebrate their shared interfaith communities." (WCCB Charlotte)
