First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and beautiful. High: 86 Low: 64.

Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:

  1. Thanks to the True Cost of Washington Tour, a gas station in Charlotte will be offering significantly lower prices for a limited time. According to WBTV, "the event, hosted by Americans for Prosperity-North Carolina, will offer gas prices as low as $2.38 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 at the Shell Station at 4936 Albemarle Road. The discounts will be given on a first-come, first-served basis, and no RVs or gas cans will be eligible." (WBTV)
  2. There's been an increase of criminals breaking into cars in most neighborhoods across the Carolinas. CMPD is working to end this trend. According to Fox 46 Charlotte, "early Tuesday morning, a would-be thief was caught on surveillance video going from car to car to trying to break into the parking lot of the Beverly Apartments in the Ballantyne neighborhood. CMPD is stepping efforts to combat the spike in thefts by promoting an awareness campaign for people lock their car doors." (Fox 46 Charlotte)
  3. Despite recommendation from investigators, the prosecution of North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein proceeded. According to WBTV, "the Wake County District Attorney's office pursued a criminal investigation into North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein despite a recommendation that the case be closed, according to a memo obtained by WBTV. The memo, written by a North Carolina State Board of Elections attorney, is the latest revelation in an unprecedented case involving the sitting attorney general over a 2020 campaign ad. Though the agency determined the ad was not a "clear violation" of the law, the DA's office, led by Democrat Lorrin Freeman, took the extraordinary step of investigating and ultimately pursuing an indictment against the state's sitting attorney general anyway." (WBTV)
  4. According to WBTV, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers "took three juvenile suspects into custody after they allegedly stole a vehicle on University City Boulevard. According to CMPD, the incident happened just before 3 a.m. on Wednesday at a 7-Eleven. Police say the victim was robbed at gunpoint and then the suspects took the victim's car. Officers attempted to perform a traffic stop on the stolen car, but the driver did not stop, leading to a chase that ended in Belmont." (WBTV)
  5. The district attorney recently announced that Mark Carver, the man who was convicted of killing UNC Charlotte student Ira Yarmolenko in 2008, had those charges against him dropped. According to WCNC, "Carver spent ten years in prison for Yarmolenko's death before he was released when a judge ordered a retrial. Yarmolenko's body was found along the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly with her car nearby. Prosecutors said his DNA was on her car and he was convicted. Carver maintained his innocence throughout the highly publicized trial, claiming he'd never seen Yarmolenko before in his life." (WCNC)
