Hello all. It's me, Alexis Goring, your host of the Charlotte Daily — back in your inbox with everything that's fit to print about what's happening in our community today.I'll get right to it.
First, today's weather:
A t-storm around in the p.m.. High: 91 Low: 72.
Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:
- Only a few days from today, America will celebrate its freedom! Read this full article by WCCB Charlotte for details on fireworks, festivals, and fun things to this 4th of July weekend. This article will provide many tips on how to celebrate this grand event! (WCCB Charlotte)
- According to WCNC, "COVID-19 trends in Mecklenburg County appear to be heading downward. The latest data from Friday shows the county shifted back into the CDC's low COVID-19 community level. The county said the level is based on hospital admissions, beds in use and new COVID-19 cases." Despite this improvement, officials say that people who are at risk of serious illness should still consider wearing masks indoors. (WCNC.com)
- According to WCCB Charlotte, "Mecklenburg County homeowners struggling with the rising cost of living can now apply for assistance through the HOMES program. This program offers qualifying county residents an economic assistance grant up to $340, that helps reduce the cost of annual homeownership." Good news: No age requirement is set for people who want to participate in the program, and the home does not have to be paid off. (WCCB Charlotte)
- According to WBTV, "The Southern Comfort Inn in west Charlotte has closed, leaving families struggling for a place to live. The current owner had owned the motel for 24 years. It became an extended stay motel that housed low- and fixed-income individuals in 2009." General Manager Traci Canterbury Jones said in a letter that the inn's doors would be closing June 30 because too many residents were not paying for their stay. (WBTV)
- The annual Give a Pint-Get a Pint Blood Drive is here for July! According to WBTV, "Anyone who donates blood at select locations between July 13-July 15, will receive a coupon for a free pint of ice cream for local Ben & Jerry's locations, and — while supplies last — a Red Cross t-shirt." For more information, call 1-800-733-2767, visit RedCrossBlood.org or download the Blood Donor App. Be sure to use sponsor code "Benandjerry". (WBTV)
