The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.
Hello, Charlotte. I'm here in your inbox this morning to get you up to speed on everything you need to know about what's going on around town.
First, today's weather:
Warmer with clouds and sun. High: 82 Low: 68.
Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:
- One person died after being hit by a car in Statesville late Saturday night. Officers responded to the collision along Taylorsville Highway. Iredell County EMS performed life-saving measures. However, according to WCNC, "the victim, 49-year-old Stephen Thomas Hart of Stony Point, died from his injuries at the scene." (WCNC.com)
- A "No Swimming" advisory was issued recently for a cove on Lake Cornelius. According to the city government, this advisory was issued due to "an estimated 515 gallons of sewage was spilled into Lake Cornelius on the night of July 8. The spill was caused by debris clogging a pump and resulting in an overflow. The discharge has been stopped by Charlotte Water staff. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services staff will monitor water quality in the area until bacteria levels are determined to be suitable for human contact." (charlottenc.gov)
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police recently made an arrest from a case in June when a man was found dead in a south Charlotte home. According to WBTV, "officers were called to a home on Heathstead Place on June 20 for a death investigation. They say when they arrived, they found 50-year-old Kimberly Mackey at the scene in need of medical treatment. She was taken to an area hospital. They also found Bradford Womack, 35, inside and pronounced him dead at the scene. Officials with the medical examiner's office determined this was a murder and detectives got an arrest warrant for Mackey for concealment of a death." (WBTV)
- A man died after a collision led him over the I-485 bridge on July 8. According to WCCB Charlotte, "state troopers responded to a collision involving a man, identified as Derrick Maxwell Jr. who was driving a Kia Passenger traveling Interstate 485 near exit 23. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Troopers say upon crashing, Maxwell's vehicle ran off the road, struck a fence and dropped from the interstate. During the fall, the car overturned in the air and collided with the below railroad tracks." (WCCB Charlotte)
- People who drive on Independence Boulevard between Interstates 277 and 485, may have seen several road projects happening there. Lately, the cost to get that job done is steadily increasing. According to Fox 46 Charlotte, "the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization said that the $400 million project is now estimated at being over $1 billion. … It's a problem across North Carolina. The costs have to do with a lot of the things seen in any other field, labor costs have gone up, along with materials costs." (Fox 46 Charlotte)
