🌱 Local Teen Dies In Memorial Day Shooting + $200 Tax Rebate For Gas

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Hello again, neighbors! It's me, Alexis Goring, your host of the Daily. Here are all the things you need to know about what's happening these days in town.

First, today's weather:

Turning out cloudy. High: 82 Low: 62.

Here are the top seven stories today in Charlotte:

  1. As of June 3, the CDC has moved the COVID-19 community level from low/green to COVID-19 community level medium/yellow in Mecklenburg County. The purpose of this community-level tool is to help people decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest COVID-19 data in their community. These varied levels are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area. "This change to the medium level means that people with underlying conditions such as asthma, COPD, high blood pressure and heart disease or anyone with a weakened immune system should be more cautious now," Dr. Raynard Washington, Mecklenburg County Public Health (MCPH) Director said. (WCNC.com)
  2. John Daniel Morales, age 15, died from injuries he sustained in an east Charlotte shooting over Memorial Day weekend. Thursday, CMPD detectives and Hickory Grove officers arrested two 15-year-old suspects for the murder of Morales and took them to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office Jail North. (WBTV)
  3. A study from a pair of Florida universities determined that 15 housing markets in the U.S. are overvalued by 50% or more. This statistic includes the two largest cities in North Carolina. Researchers found that Raleigh ranks at No. 14 and Charlotte ranks at No. 11. According to Raleigh News & Observer, to determine the overvalued housing market, researchers "analyzed the percentage difference between a home's "expected price" and what buyers are actually paying." (Raleigh News & Observer)
  4. Officers flew into action when they found a wheelchair that was hiding 23 pounds of cocaine at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. After investigating the wheelchair, they discovered four packages of cocaine in the seat cushions. Officers estimated the street value of the cocaine to be $378,000. They arrested the owner of the wheelchair, Alexander A. Lopez-Morel and charged him with felony trafficking in cocaine. (WGHP FOX8 Greensboro)
  5. Police were conducting a homicide investigation in north Charlotte Friday morning. Investigators responded to Philadelphia Court, which is in the area of Northlake Mall. Officers said that a 26-year-old man was shot in the parking lot. He was taken to the hospital and died. (WBTV)
  6. Who wants a $200 tax rebate to help with high gas prices? Democrats in the state Senate are pitching a proposal to give $200 tax rebates to North Carolina motorists dealing with high gas prices. Every person at least 18 years old with a valid North Carolina driver's license would receive this rebate. The funds would come from the expected $4.2 billion in revenue over-collections this fiscal year. (WCNC.com)
  7. According to WBTV, former Mecklenburg County Sheriff Jim Pendergraph and Charlotte gun shop owner Larry Hyatt are advocating for a national mental health database to be used for gun permitting across the country. When he served as sheriff, Pendergraph issued thousands of gun permits. Hyatt's shop sold hundreds of thousands of guns since opening in 1959. After hearing the news about all of the mass shootings in the last few weeks, both men think that thorough background checks are needed for people looking to obtain gun permits. (WBTV)
