Man Arrested After School Bus Was Shot: Police

Luckily, no kids were hurt. The bus driver had minor injuries from broken glass.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A man has been charged in connection with a shooting in Charlotte Thursday morning which ended up with a bullet hitting a school bus.

Nelson Handy III was at a gas station by The Plaza and Parkwood when he and another man got into an argument, investigators say. They then exchanged fire with handguns, missing each other and hitting the school bus. There were 19 kids on board, none of whom were injured.

The school bus was from Charlotte's Lab Charter School. Police said the bus was not the target of the gunfire, WFAE reported, but was caught in the crossfire. The bus driver was hit by glass and had minor injuries, but no students were injured. Another vehicle was it by the gunfire, but the driver was not injured.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police found Handy Friday morning, who led police on a chase when they tried to stop him. He was eventually caught and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, driving with license revoked, reckless driving, failing to heed emergency light and fleeing to elude law enforcement.

Police are still looking for the second man involved int he shooting. Anybody with information is urged to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
