Man Buys Winning Lottery Ticket On Way Home From Making Donation

A Charlotte man on the way back home from dropping off a donation at Salvation Army won nearly $350,000 this week, lottery officials said.

CHARLOTTE, NC β€” A Charlotte man on the way back home from dropping off a donation at Salvation Army won nearly $350,000 this week playing the β€œCash 5” lottery game, according to North Carolina Education Lottery officials.

Thomas Frye stopped at Adams Mart on East Independence Boulevard in Matthews Monday after dropping off an old bed frame, and used all Quick Pick numbers for the $1 statewide lottery game. According to NCEL, his odds of winning were one in 962,598.

It wasn’t until a day later that he realized he’d won.

β€œI just kept looking at the tickets,” Frye said. β€œI had to check the numbers at least three times.”

Frye traveled to Raleigh Wednesday to claim the prize, which after state and federal withholdings, was $246,937.

β€œThis is a big boost to our retirement,” Frye said.
