Man Dies After Crashing Into Back Of CATS Bus On North Tryon

Charlotte police have identified the man killed when his car ran into the back of a city bus pulling away from a bus stop.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Drug use and alcohol “appear to be a factor” in a car crash on North Tryon Street Saturday that left a driver dead after the Nissan he was driving ran into the back of a Charlotte Area Transit Bus pulling away from a bus stop, police say.

The accident occurred just after 11 p.m. Dec. 2, when James Allen Sumpter, 37, ran the 2007 Nissan Sentra he was driving into the back of a city bus that had just pulled away from a bus stop in the 4700 block of North Tryon Street, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. The CATS bus, driven by Nadia Harris, 28, had 14 passengers on board, none of whom were injured in the accident, CMPD said.

Investigators say that while speed was not believed to be a factor for either drivers, alcohol and drug use appeared to be a factor for Sumpter. He was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.
