🌱 Memorial Day Weekend Events + Black Food Trucks In South Charlotte

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Good morning, neighbors! It's me, Alexis Goring, your host of the Daily. Here's all the local news you need to know right now.

First, today's weather:

Humid with a thunderstorm. High: 79 Low: 61.

Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:

  1. Read this article for 10 activities to do around Charlotte this Memorial Day weekend. All of these events share one theme in common: paying remembrance to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. WBTV has compiled a list of 10 events happening this weekend, all within Charlotte and the surrounding areas. Such as: National Whitewater Center Memorial Day festivities, Sunday brunch on the Lady of the Lake, Memorial Day weekend vendor fair, and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. (WBTV)
  2. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is asking for help in finding a missing 67-year-old woman from Charlotte. Frances Collett Apperson was last seen on May 17. She is about five-foot-two, with brown hair and brown eyes. According to police, she may be driving her silver 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with a North Carolina tag number JKV-9829. It's likely that Apperson is traveling through Burke County. (WCNC.com)
  3. The Girl Scouts Hornets' Nest Council announced the 2022 Gold Award recipients in the Charlotte area. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, they earned the highest Girl Scouts' award. The Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn as they work hard to create sustainable change that is meaningful locally, nationally, and globally. (kiss951.com)
  4. Memorial Day weekend 2022 is just the beginning of what is expected to be a very busy summer travel season. Charlotte Douglas International Airport expects over 30,000 passengers per day through Memorial Day. Jack Christine, chief operating officer at Charlotte Douglas, said volume is almost back to pre-pandemic levels. During Memorial Day weekend in 2019, this local airport saw nearly 34,000 passengers. (WCNC.com)
  5. The city of Charlotte created their first draft of the Strategic Mobility Plan that aims to reduce one-person vehicles to half of all transportation trips by 2040. It's also about getting more cars off the road and convincing people to use other modes of transportation such as walking, biking or riding public transit. State and local leaders hope this will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slow global warming, which is why they're tackling transportation and electricity production. (WFAE)

  • Join Charlotte Symphony Orchestra for Jurassic Park as you've never seen it before: projected on a giant screen while the orchestra plays the score LIVE! (Facebook)
  • Who wants to clean out their maternity stash? Looking for t-shirts and active leggings with pockets, size medium. Please send me pictures and prices. (Nextdoor)
  • Calle Sol was where we ate today. The $8 buffet lunch is highly recommend! (Nextdoor)
  • Coyotes in Myers Park? We saw two coyotes run across our yard. Very nervous about our dogs. I didn't think this would be an issue in Myers Park. Has anybody else seen any? (Nextdoor)
  • This dog was stolen during a home robbery on May 20. Family is devastated and just want their dog back. If you see or know of anyone who has recently acquired a dog like this or know if someone trying to sell one, please leave a message. (Nextdoor)
  • Help recognize our custodians at Myers Park! If you have not already heard, a select few members of the Myers Park Class of 2022 committed harmful acts of vandalism and destruction on our campus as a "senior prank". (Nextdoor)
  • I need someone to service my washer. I'm not sure why the clothes are still soaking wet after it's been on the spin cycle. (Nextdoor)
  • My car was broken into several nights ago. My glove compartment was open and everything in it was tossed on the floor. Nothing was taken. (Nextdoor)
  • Does anyone know where I can cash a balance transfer check in person? One of my clients paid me for her house cleaning for the month with one and my online banking app doesn't do it for that particular check. (Nextdoor)
