CHARLOTTE, NC β€” On Tuesday, Aug. 6, police departments across the U.S., including Charlotte, will be holding "National Night Out" community events aimed at strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. In the Queen City, more than 70 neighborhood events are planned, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

For nearly 40 years, National Night Out events have been held across the U.S. Last year, an estimated 38 million residents in 16,000 communities were expected to participate, according to the organization.

β€œNational Night Out is important to CMPD because it is an opportunity to build community,” CMPD Chief Kerr Putney said in a statement. β€œThat is how we make a difference as well as prevent crime.”
