NC Lottery Winner Vows To Give Away All His Winnings

A Statesville man won $250,000 in the lottery and says he's going to do this with the windfall.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- If you instantly became $250,000 richer, what would you do with your winnings? Most of us would likely buy a new car, maybe take a few far-flung vacations or, for the more pragmatic among us, pay off debt.

When Terry McClelland of Statesville, N.C. faced this very scenario of deciding what he would spend a $250,000 lottery windfall, he decided to go in another direction. He’s going to give it away.

After McClelland, who is an Army veteran, won the money in a scratch off ticket, he decided to make his wife’s dream come true and will use the money to start a nonprofit addiction treatment counseling center, according to WBTV.

His wife, also named Terry, is studying for a doctorate in psychology. “This is what I was put on this earth to do,” she said. “This is why I did all those years of college. There’s people out there that need something, and now we are going to be able to help and bless someone else.”

McClelland purchased the winning Diamond Dazzler scratch-off ticket at a Speedway store in Statesville. After taxes, the take home pay out is $173,754.
