Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. Officer Derric Entwistle, a CMPD officer, was arrested for Driving While Impaired in Jacksonville (NC). According to WCCB Charlotte, this arrest "happened after Onslow County Sheriff's Office deputies initiated a traffic stop while the officer was off duty. CMPD says Entwistle is being placed on administrative assignment pending an investigation into this incident." (WCCB Charlotte)
  2. Carolina Panthers welcomed a new member, as the team recently traded for the 2018 No. 1 overall pick. Baker Mayfield is his name. According to WCNC, "The Panthers will send a 2024 fifth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Mayfield, who enters the final year of his rookie contract. Mayfield was due to make $18.5 million but agreed to a $3.5 million pay cut to make the trade happen." (WCNC.com)
  3. The south Charlotte area was the setting for a police chase that ended in a crash on Wednesday afternoon. The chase lasted more than an hour. According to WBTV, this chase "started as a breaking-and-entering call where a Jeep was stolen. Since then, the suspect had stolen three additional vehicles and drove erratically through the area. The chase ended when what appeared to be a stolen black SUV crashed into another vehicle." (WBTV)
  4. According to WCCB Charlotte, "Roughly 30 new laws are in effect in North Carolina as of July 1. They touch on everything from the DMV, education, public employee pay, high school athletics and liquor laws." People will have to pay more for their driver's license, their vehicle registration or copy of their driving record. State employees and state law enforcement officers are entitled to a 2.5% salary increase. All students should be able to read by the third grade. Teachers will receive an additional $350 bonus in addition to their raises. (WCCB Charlotte)
  5. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, "Four people were injured when a suspect stabbed and slashed them in north Charlotte early Wednesday morning." The incident happened in the 4200 block of Statesville Road on July 6. (Fox 46 Charlotte)
