NC State Students Win Top Honors In Explaining Government

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Governmental budgets can often be confusing and a challenge to understand. A team of students from North Carolina State University, however, recently won top honors for translating the complexities of government financial data in layman terms.

The 2017 Government Case Challenge, sponsored by the Association of Government Accountants, created a contest to see who could best explain financial and performance indicators from Fairfax City, Va. The NCSU team, along with five other teams from across the nation, submitted Citizen Centric Reports based upon financial data from Fairfax.

The Citizen Centric Report is a tool being used by a growing number of jurisdictions to communicate fiscal and performance details in an easily digested format and is intended to provide an added layer of transparency and accountability to annual budgets.

The winning CCR enty and explanatory video submitted by the North Carolina State team, which is comprised of students Adam Turner, Haruka Adachi and Benjamin Hawley, will also be used by the city in the future, according to city leadership.

“We are very impressed with the creative content of the submitted CCR and will be able to use the students’ ideas as the city prepares to create its own inaugural CCR for our citizens,” said Fairfax City Mayor David Meyer.
