No Charges In Crash That Left Motorcyclist Dead: CMPD

The driver of the motorcycle was killed after he crashed into the back of a tractor trailer in southwest Charlotte, police said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A police investigation is underway after the driver of a motorcycle was killed when he crashed into the back of a tractor trailer, was thrown from the bike and run over by a dump truck in southwest Charlotte Wednesday.

According to an Aug. 8 police report, the driver of the 2007 Yamaha motorcycle, who has been identified as 40-year-old Andre Lavell Williams, was speeding when he hit the right rear of the Freightliner tractor trailer shortly after 4 p.m. in the 10200 block of South Tryon Street. The motorcycle became lodged under the trailer, and Williams was thrown into the roadway. He was then run over by a dump truck.

The dump truck driver, identified by CMPD as Floyd Roderick Lindsey Jr., stopped immediately and told police he did not see Williams in the roadway. Williams was pronounced dead on the scene, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

James Darrin Roscoe, the driver of the tractor trailer, told police he was not aware of the initial crash into the back of the trailer, and drove about a quarter of a mile on General Drive before the badly damaged motorcycle broke free from underneath the trailer as he drove over railroad tracks. He stopped immediately when he saw the motorcycle in his rear view mirror, according to the police report.

A witness told police that he saw the motorcycle traveling at about 70 mph prior to the crash in a stretch of roadway that is a 45 mph zone. “Excessive speed by the motorcyclist appears to be a contributing factor,” the CMPD report said. “Impairment is unknown at this time.”

The truck drivers were both interviewed at the scene by police, who say impairment and excessive speed were not contributing factors for them. No charges have been filed against the drivers at this time, CMPD said.
