Noisy Neighbors? Fed Map Shows U.S. Aviation, Road Noise

A new transportation map illustrates transportation noise. How does air and highway travel sound to you?

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Ever wonder how the road and airplane noise in your neck of the woods stacks up? The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics has just released a nation-wide noise map, and the results are surprising.

Almost 98 percent of the U.S. has the potential for transportation noise exposure that’s comparable to the sound of a refrigerator hum, or below 50 decibels, according to the map.

“The purpose of the noise map is to facilitate the tracking of trends in transportation-related noise, by mode, and collectively for multiple transportation modes,” BTS said.
