Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:
- There's a lot of partisan fighting and a lack of trust in politics and the electoral process in America. However, politicians on both sides are prompting action in North Carolina to address this issue. According to WFAE, "this fall, Republicans and Democrats are coming together in North Carolina for a “Trusted Elections Tour,” a bipartisan effort to promote confidence in the voting process among the state’s residents. Former Democrat Charlotte mayor Jennifer Roberts and former Republican North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr are working together through the Carter Center (founded by former President Jimmy Carter) to host a series of more than a dozen town halls around the state to educate and promote confidence in the integrity of the election system." (WFAE)
- According to WCNC, "the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is asking for the public's help to find an 82-year-old man. Alexander Allison was last seen at his home on Tuckaseegee Road, not far from Mulberry Pond Drive, and wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans." Allison is a Black male, who is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. He has brown eyes and partially bald with gray hair. (WCNC.com)
- According to WBTV, "the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a homicide that took place Saturday morning. According to police, the incident took place on Cherrycrest Lane in southwest Charlotte sometime around 7:43 a.m. When officers arrived, a man was found suffering from a gunshot wound." The victim died on the scene. (WBTV)
- According to WSOC-TV, "NoDa Brewing Co. will open its fourth taproom next month. The Charlotte brewery’s latest venue, called NoDa Brewing Co. Tapas, located at 1118 Environ Way in Chapel Hill, will include a restaurant. That space is home to Old East Tavern, which will close over Labor Day weekend." This will be NoDa’s first taproom outside of the Charlotte market as well as the brewery’s first restaurant. (WSOC-TV)
- According to WCCB Charlotte, "right in the heart of Charlotte, right past Fred Alexander park stands a strong tribe, grounded in its roots, unified, and dedicated to changing the lives of Charlotte’s Black youth. With the commitment to expanding young minds The Males Place, continues to be one of Charlotte’s most profound non-profit organizations." Males Place is now one of the largest mentoring organizations in North Carolina. It is a multicultural organization that has "mentored over 3,000 youth through practices that highlight and implement self-awareness. The mission of the program aims to focus the minds of the youth, African-American boys aged 12-18, on community and civic involvement by providing comprehensive and prevention-based behavior health programming."
