Here are the top six stories in Charlotte today:

  1. Does your child have a dyslexia diagnosis that make learning in school difficult? A nonprofit called The Fletcher School exists to help your child succeed. According to WBTV, "the Fletcher School empowers students with learning differences to realize their full potential. The school offers individuated, multisensory, college preparatory curriculum from kindergarten to 12th grade that helps every student succeed." (WBTV)
  2. An accident in north Charlotte that occurred earlier this month, killed two people. According to Fox 46 Charlotte, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police "confirmed with Queen City News on Tuesday that David Wayne Olney, one of the victims involved in the accident, passed away several days after the crash at Atrium Main. Officers responded to calls regarding the accident on Wednesday, Aug. 10, near the 1300 block of Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road in north Charlotte. Devon Kerr, 29, was found suffering from injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Olney was also found suffering from injuries and was transported to an area hospital to be treated." (Fox 46 Charlotte)
  3. According to Spectrum News, "companies in North Carolina reported more than 3,000 layoffs planned for this year. ... But new job announcements and open jobs far outweigh the number of people getting laid off. The North Carolina Department of Commerce has announced more than 21,000 jobs so far this year, though some of those will take a couple of years to come online. In the same time frame, the department has received notice of 3,042 layoffs from companies all over the state." (Spectrum News)
  4. The 2022-23 school year has begun for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. According to WBTV, "the school district has announced a detailed plan on how it will attempt to prevent any spread of monkeypox. ... It can spread to anyone through close, often skin-to-skin, contact with a person infected. Children that are eight years old or younger, children or adults with compromised immune systems, people with skin conditions and women who are pregnant are the populations at increased risk of the illness. To minimize risk, CMS is encouraging students and staff to limit sharing of school supplies, drinks, utensils and clothing." (WBTV)
  5. According to WCNC, "if you’re in the market for a new car, be prepared to burn rubber. According to iSeeCars.com, the microchip shortage continues to impact the auto industry, causing new car production to slow, and creating a dip in supply. Less supply means more competition for the vehicles that dealers are able to get on the lot. iSeeCars.com analyzed more than 224,000 new and used car sales in June 2022 and found that the average new car sells in 37.2 days." (WCNC.com)
  6. Edward Jones says that "inflation and higher costs are delaying and changing major life milestones for Charlotte residents." According to a study by financial services firm Edward Jones, "in the last year, half (50%) of Charlotte residents adjusted their timelines for purchasing or selling a home, getting married, starting a family, changing careers, pursuing secondary education or retiring. They’re also feeling the impact of higher costs, rising interest rates and housing costs. While there’s been no shortage of challenges, many Charlotte residents are putting a greater focus on health, family, finances and purpose. ... and while 42% of Charlotte residents delayed their original timelines for major life events, they’ve been on par with the national average in changing these key milestones."
