North Carolina Wakes To Storm Cleanup

Storms moving through the Charlotte-metro region dumped inches of rain and sparked reports of possible tornadoes.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Strong afternoon storms dumped more than two inches of rain in the Charlotte metro region Monday afternoon, flooding areas of the Queen City, leaving behind storm debris from high winds and possible tornados, and leaving thousands without power.

The brunt of the intense line of storms was felt west of the Charlotte region, in areas such as Catawba County, where a state of emergency was declared after the storm ripped thorugh the community and left 28,000 residents were without power Tuesday morning, WSOC reported.

A tornado ripped through Cleveland, Catawba, Burke, and Alexander counties around 3:30 p.m. Oct. 24, according to The Charlotte Observer. Hickory Regional Airport reported damage to two hangars, and flash flooding in Boone, N.C., triggered evacuation of at least three apartment complexes housing, the newspaper said.

The impact of the storm was widespread, according to state authorities. At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, about 66,000 homes and businesses were without power throughout the state, according to North Carolina Emergency Management.
