Pedestrian Left In Serious Condition After Late Night Hit-And-Run

The man initially ran from the scene of a crash, and was later hit by a car after he jumped on its hood, CMPD said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte police are searching for the driver of a blue sedan after a series of events Sunday evening that led to three vehicle crashes and a man left with life-threatening injuries after he was struck by the car and left in the road.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. in the 3400 block of Beatties Ford Road in north Charlotte. Officers responding to the scene found three separate vehicle crashes, and the man, who was identified as James Junior-Grant Brooks II, lying in the road.

Brooks was transported to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, CMPD said.

According to a police account of the incident, Brooks was driving a 2014 Dodge Avenger south on Beatties Ford Road at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended a Honda CRV traveling in the same direction.

"As a result of the crash, the two vehicles became attached," at which point Brooks got out of the car and ran from the crash scene, police said.

The driver of the Honda steered the SUV to the right, which separated the two vehicles. The driverless Dodge, however, kept going south on Beatties Ford Road, crossing into northbound lanes and hitting a Chrysler Aspen traveling north, police said.

"Brooks then jumped onto the hood of a blue sedan that was traveling north," CMPD said. "He then rode the hood of that car back to the 3400 block of Beatties Ford before falling off and being struck by that vehicle, which did not remain at the scene."

CMPD investigators at the scene said collected evidence indicates the vehicle that struck Brooks and fled the scene may have been a Volkswagen Passat.

Police said that anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle which fled the scene is asked to call CMPD at 704-432-2169 or leave information anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
