Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:
- The People's Market, known for its "special kind of energy," is thriving in its new location! "If you close your eyes and just listen, what you hear is the sound of community. It's hard to believe that a little over two-and-a-half years ago, it all went silent when the original People's Market in Dilworth closed suddenly. While there are a few differences between the original spot in Dilworth and the new Elizabeth location, Duran said the one thing that will never change is the foundation on which The People's Market was built: to be a gathering spot for all people, no matter who they are," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
- "North Carolina could soon see an expansion of Medicaid thanks to a proposal from the North Carolina Healthcare Association that may finally get the ball rolling in the state. North Carolina is one of just 12 states in the U.S. that didn't expand Medicaid since the Affordable Care Act Medicaid Expansion became effective in 2014. Legal advocates in the state have been pushing for North Carolina to expand Medicaid for a while, saying there's a coverage gap that leaves thousands of people without health insurance," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
- Charlotte-based artist Katrina Sánchez makes special meaning and purpose with noodles. She "weaves together two multicolored knitted "noodles," working each one over and under the other to produce a vibrant grid of sorts. Each noodle has been knit with care and then stuffed before the weaving begins. Each of Sánchez's weavings — which have been featured in galleries and displays in the Carolinas and beyond — is a labor of love," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
- "The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says it is sticking with its policy on regulatory traffic stops. In a news release, CMPD said it does not intend to end regulatory traffic stops. CMPD said they are a crucial investigative tool for vehicle safety and crime management. CMPD said the overall number of traffic stops performed by officers over the past five years has declined with the exception of speeding enforcement," WCCB Charlotte reports. (WCCB Charlotte)
- On Oct. 4, "officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service at the Fox & Hound restaurant in the 9300 block of Center Lake Drive. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim with a gunshot wound. Medical personnel responded and transported the victim to Atrium Main with life-threatening injuries. The victim was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. The initial investigation revealed that a physical altercation took place inside the restaurant before the shooting occurred outside. ... The investigation into this case is active and ongoing," according to City of Charlotte Government. (City of Charlotte Government)
