Pets Provide Comfort to Residents at Local Retirement Community
Grace Ridge in Morganton shares the benefits of living in a pet-friendly retirement community

Visits to retirement communities across the country have been restricted due to the pandemic, but residents at Grace Ridge retirement community in Morganton have been able to take advantage of companionship of another kind.
Grace Ridge knows the benefits of owning a pet and has remained a pet-friendly community for seven years. For the last several months, that amenity has taken on added importance.
Currently, 17 residents are proud pet parents at Grace Ridge. Pat Gaetje is one of them. Pat brought her 5-year-old Shih Tzu, Reesey, with her when she moved into the community three years ago. She says this was a big reason why she chose to call Grace Ridge her forever home.

βShe brightens my day and provides comfort, especially during these times,β said Pat. βAll she wants to do is jump up on my lap and cuddle.β
Pets provide companionship, a sense of purpose, social engagement, and opportunities to remain active. According to research, health benefits can include less stress, feeling of safety, improved socialization, and decreased feelings of depression and loneliness. These benefits are especially important during the current pandemic, combating the social isolation and loneliness that has unfortunately followed.
