Police Hope To Catch ‘Granny Thief’ Before She Strikes Again
Police say this elderly woman picked up the victim's wallet and put it in her own purse, then denied the whole thing happened.
WAYNESVILLE, NC — Police in western North Carolina are asking for the public’s help in identifying a “granny thief” who they say stole a victim’s wallet in Walmart Thursday.
“Please help us identify ‘Granny Thief’ before she strikes again,” the Waynesville Police Department said on its Facebook page.
According to police, the theft victim was shopping in Walmart on June 28 with a toddler, who reached into her purse, grabbed her wallet and gave it a toss while they were waiting in the checkout line. When the wallet hit the floor, the elderly bandit picked it up and stuck it in her own purse, police said.

The victim asked the woman if she might have picked it up, but “Granny Thief” denied it.
Security video footage, however, tells a different story.

While crime is never a laughing matter, the public comments related to this case certainly are.
“Is the future pitcher grandson being charged as an accessory?” wrote D. Kirk Wall.
“That is terrible!” said Lee Chavers. “I'm just thinking about how one of her children are gonna feel if they see this post! Would you turn your own mother in? Yikes....hard one.”
Anyone who knows the identity of this woman is asked to contact the Waynesville Police Department.
And, as Selena Pollard said, “Well here's to hoping you find MeMaw the Outlaw.”
