Employee Killed During Armed Robbery At Charlotte Steak 'N Shake

An employee of a south Charlotte Steak 'N Shake was killed and two others wounded during a midday armed robbery, police said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — An employee of a South Charlotte Steak 'N Shake was killed Tuesday and two others injured as a result of an armed robbery attempt that ended with the suspects shooting at responding police officers.

The incident occurred at the Steak 'n Shake located in the 9700 block of South Boulevard.
"All officers are ok," CMPD said in a tweet.

According to CMPD Chief Kerr Putney, two officers from Pineville responded to the restaurant after receiving a call about an armed robbery. When they arrived, an employee had been shot and the suspect remained inside, Putney said.

The officers “engaged the suspect, there’s gunfire exchanged and suspect is hit at least once,” Putney said, recalling the preliminary investigation findings.

The robbery suspect was transported to CMC Main for treatment of his injuries, he said. A male Putney described as “a witness or an occupant” in the building was also shot and transported to an area hospital.

CMPD has assumed lead over the criminal aspect of the incident, while Pineville Police Department will handle internal review of the officer involved shooting, Putney said.
