Police Make Arrest In Sunday Night Hit-And-Run Death

Police say they's found the driver of the white Honda Pilot with damage to on its front left behind Sunday's fatal hit-and-run.

UPDATE: The driver of the Honda Pilot involved in a fatal hit-and-run Sunday evening on Freedom Drive in Charlotte has been named by CMPD as Jerry Lynn Helms.

Helms, 52, was arrested with assistance from the Lancaster and Chester County Sheriff Departments, and charged with felony hit and run in the death of Timothy Malcolm Cherry.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Police say it was a white 2011 Honda Pilot with damage to its front left area missing a fog light and fog light housing that hit and killed a pedestrian on Freedom Drive late Sunday night.

The hit-and-run happened around 11:30 p.m. June 18 in the 3900 block of Freedom Drive, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. When police arrived at the scene, they found a male victim lying dead in the left lane. A witness told officers they saw a white SUV run a red light on Ashley Road before turning left onto Freedom Drive and hitting the man. The suspect was last seen driving on I-85 south.
