Police Searching For Black SUV After Hit-And-Run Death

Perry Wayne Smith died Tuesday from injuries he sustained when he was hit by a black SUV July 14, police said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A 60 year-old man is dead from injuries he sustained last month when he was struck by a black SUV as he rode his bicycle in west Charlotte. Charlotte police are now searching for the driver of that vehicle, who fled the scene.

According to a police report, Perry Wayne Smith, 60, was struck shortly after 8 p.m. as he biked along the 8000 block of Moores Chapel Road on July 14. He called 911 the next day to request help getting to the hospital.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said while they did receive a 911 call about the accident the night it occurred, responding officers were not able to locate anyone involved in the accident.

Smith told CMPD the large black SUV that struck him, possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe, hit him with its right side-view mirror, causing the bicycle handlebars to strike him in his torso before he was thrown to the ground.

Smith died Aug. 20 as a result of those injures, CMPD said.
