Police Volunteer Struck In Hit-And-Run Heads To Surgery
A 60-year-old police volunteer struck by a hit-and-run driver while directing traffic heads to surgery Tuesday.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver after a 60-year-old volunteer helping Charlotte direct traffic after a traffic accident Monday afternoon was struck by a white sedan that sped off.
Citizens on Patrol volunteer William Schweppe was struck by the car around 6:30 p.m. as he helped Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police direct rush hour traffic along Park Road between Hillside Avenue and Townes Road following a vehicle accident that took out a utility pole.
According to CMPD, Schweppe was wearing a reflective vest and using a traffic wand flashlight next to a marked vehicle with flashing emergency lights when he was hit by the car before it sped off.

Schweppe, who suffered a serious but non-life threatening injury, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center and is expected to have surgery Nov. 28, CMPD said.
