Here are the top four stories today in Charlotte:
- On Monday afternoon, thousands of people in the east Charlotte area lost power after a severe thunderstorm and possible tornado brought down trees and powerlines. WCNC reported that a possible tornado began around 1:40 p.m. before moving northeast across Interstate 485. According to WCNC, the National Weather Service will visit the Reedy Creek neighborhood and other impacted areas today to determine whether the damage was caused by an actual tornado. (WCNC.com)
- Emergency medical services had to pull a person from their vehicle on Monday afternoon after the car crashed into a home in north Charlotte, said the Charlotte Fire Department. The incident took place on the 3000 block of Mallard Forest Drive near Mallard Creek Road, and the resident of the home has now been displaced. That person was home at the time of the crash, but no injuries were reported. The fire department is currently investigating the crash. (Fox 46 Charlotte)
- California real estate firm Vivo Living recently announced plans to turn a Charlotte hotel into affordable housing to combat rising rents in the area. The hotel on North Tryon Street will reportedly be converted into an apartment building with rent up to 20 percent below market value and hotel-like amenities such as a living room lobby with free Wi-Fi, lounge areas, a pool, and a fitness center. This will mark Vivo Living's fourth "recycled" hotel in North Carolina and the 20th across the U.S. According to Apartment List, Charlotte's rent prices have increased over 18 percent from April 2021 to April 2022. - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have officially charged 24-year-old Alexander Holman for the Apr. 30 shooting and murder of Christian Lawrence Siley, age 23. The Crime Gun Suppression Team and University Division Crime Reduction Unit officers reportedly helped homicide detectives arrest Holman on May 19 for an unrelated charge. Officials obtained a warrant for the first-degree murder of Siley after interviewing Holman and charged him in connection with the homicide. (WBTV)
