🌱 Rescue Mission Helps Families + TravelSafely App Launched

Here are the top six stories today in Charlotte:

  1. "An escaped inmate from North Carolina was captured Thursday afternoon in York County, SC. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety says Joshua Ostwalt, 32, escaped from a recreation yard in Lumberton on Wednesday. Officers in York County took him into custody Thursday afternoon. Ostwalt will be returned to North Carolina to face charges," WCCB Charlotte reports. (WCCB Charlotte)
  2. "Lots of wonderful charity organizations work to provide Thanksgiving meals to people who need them, but the Charlotte Rescue Mission goes the extra mile to make these meals extra special. The Charlotte Rescue Mission, located in the shadows of Bank of America Stadium in Uptown, literally changes lives every day. ... Every Thanksgiving, the Charlotte Rescue Mission offers a special food box so needy families can have a delicious dinner they can prepare at home. That meal includes all the fixings and a turkey. This year, more than ever, the Charlotte Rescue Mission needs extra help," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
  3. "Speedway Christmas, presented by Atrium Health, opens Friday, Nov. 18, featuring more than 4 million sparkling LED lights along a 3.75-mile course that takes guests around the legendary track, through the infield and under the concourse. ... Atrium Health is a long-standing partner of Charlotte Motor Speedway and is excited to add Speedway Christmas to its partnership to further engage with families in the region. In this inaugural year of a multi-year agreement, Atrium Health hopes to instill positivity into the holiday season," WBTV reports. (WBTV)
  4. "Environmental enthusiasts are reacting to a report that says recycling plastic is a “dead-end street.” All plastic is not the same, which makes it labor-intensive and costly to recycle. In most major cities across the country, including Charlotte, a majority of plastic ends up in a landfill. ... Reusing or eliminating the use of plastic altogether is the only guaranteed way to keep them out of landfills," WGHP FOX8 Greensboro reports. (WGHP FOX8 Greensboro)
  5. "Months after sustaining a head injury in a July attack, a Charlotte man has died and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating his death as a homicide. ... On July 24, Corey Black was hospitalized after an assault near the 4400 block of Randolph Road. ... Black, 59, died of his injuries on Nov. 5," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
  6. The City of Charlotte's Department of Transportation (CDOT) recently "launched the TravelSafely App with a pilot project in South End. The new app is designed to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists by connecting users to an electronic network of intersection and crosswalk data, as well as to each other. The app is part of the city's Vision Zero safety initiative that seeks to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries," City of Charlotte Government reports. (charlottenc.gov)
