River Gate Elementary Named Winner Of ACC United Way Reading Challenge
River Gate Elementary was named the winner of the ACC United Way Reading Challenge at a Dec. 6 pep rally that was held at the school.
River Gate Elementary was named the winner of the ACC United Way Reading Challenge at a Dec. 6 pep rally that was held at the school. Pineville and Winget Park elementary schools were also in the competition, which ran from Oct. 21 to Nov. 8.
“We are so excited to win this challenge,” said Dr. Terri Cooper, River Gate’s principal. “We love to read, and our students and staff have a lot of enthusiasm around literacy.”

The pep rally featured an appearance by the Atlantic Coast Conference team mascots. Amy Yakola, chief of external affairs for the ACC, read “The Book with No Pictures.” FlyTy and Danny with Carolina Sound and Stage were emcee and DJ, respectively.
River Gate won with a total of 386,591 pages read. Pineville students read 366,942 pages, and Winget Park’s total was 153,764. Students at the three schools read a total of 907,297 pages, equaling 75,608 books.

River Gate’s winning classes will attend the Dr. Pepper ACC Football Championship Game at Bank of America Stadium Dec. 7 and will be recognized on the football field.
