Here's Why South Meck High School Campus Was Evacuated

Emergency crews responded to South Meck High Wednesday afternoon for an "air quality" issue, and here's the straight poop why.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Emergency crews responded to South Mecklenburg High School Wednesday afternoon for an "air quality" situation that may have involved hazardous materials and required medical personnel to respond, according to multiple reports.

According to school officials, part of the campus was evacuated.

Then, school officials sent a message to school parents: “An event in a building on our campus involving air quality has caused an evacuation of students and staff in a section of our campus. Emergency personnel are on campus and investigating. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. All students and staff are safe, some parts of the our campus are closed off due to emergency vehicles.”

News crews rushed to the scene. Twitter was buzzing with updates and questions. What is going on at South Meck High?

It didn't take long for Charlotte Fire Department on duty to figure it out. "CFD Haz Mat Teams monitored affected area and found nothing hazardous," CFD said. "odor was caused by clogged toilet."

Say what? Talk about a news story quickly going down the drain.

According to fire officials, no students or faculty had been transported by medic.

“It seemed like everyone was clueless to what was actually happening,” a senior told a Fox46 reporter. “No one really knew what was happening or what to do.”

On a side note, there are 11 more school days left for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
