🌱 Sterling Community Residents Pushed Out + Booster For Children

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Hello, everybody. I'm back in your inbox this morning to walk you through everything you need to know about what's happening these days in Charlotte.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy. High: 75 Low: 63.

Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. Dozens of people who've been living in south Charlotte's Sterling community for years are stressed about trying to find a new place to live because last week a new company bought the property and are telling residents to move now. On May 23, leaders with the China Grove AME Zion Church met with about 100 people from the community to help address the issue. Rev. David Scott Cunningham, who has church members who must move out soon, is offering his church as a resource for those residents. (WSOC Charlotte)
  2. As of this week, Mecklenburg County Public Health (MCPH) is offering the COVID-19 booster for children ages 5 to 11 years. Now they can receive a COVID-19 booster five months after the date of their most recent COVID-19 vaccine dose. The Pfizer booster is the only brand currently available to children ages 5 to 11. The recommendation is that everyone 5 years old and up should have a booster vaccine when eligible. (MECKNC.gov)
  3. The Charlotte 49ers Athletics Department has announced its EverGreen Athletics Facilities Master Vision, which will integrate into UNC Charlotte's overall campus master plan that is being updated. This vision includes substantial upgrades to existing facilities as well as the construction of new spaces to enhance the overall development of its entire program. Charlotte is currently focused on the $102 million Phase I, which features the first expansion of Jerry Richardson Stadium, a design already underway for a new softball clubhouse and recently completed upgrades to the football locker room. 4. Detectives have charged 24-year-old Alexander Holman for the murder of 23-year-old Christian Lawrence Siley. The shooting took place on April 30 on West Woodlawn Road in southwest Charlotte. On May 19, Crime Gun Suppression Team detectives and University Division Crime Reduction Unit officers assisted homicide detectives with Holman's arrest for an unrelated charge. A warrant for first-degree murder was obtained against Holman for his role in the April 30 homicide. (WBTV)
  5. People who identify as Hispanic or Latino and Latina make up this country's second largest ethnic group, but only 8 percent of the tech sector is made up of Hispanic workers and only 2 percent of employed engineers are Hispanic women. DeVry University is dedicated to addressing and closing the gap on the underrepresentation of Hispanics in the technology industry. DeVry University is committed to being a part of that solution through the launch of its NextGen Hispanic Scholars Program, which is designed to help Hispanic, Latino and Latina students overcome tech skills barriers and become workforce-ready by graduation.
