Strong Thunderstorms, High Winds: Charlotte Metro Forecast

A storm system moving into the Charlotte metro region will bring rain and possibly severe thunderstorms today. Here's what you can expect.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A storm system moving into the Charlotte metro region will bring plenty of rain and possibly severe thunderstorms today, according to National Weather Service forecasters. The storms could become severe with possible damaging winds, and even a few tornadoes, NWS said.

"Some storms could become strong to severe, with the primary threats being damaging winds and large hail," NWS said in a hazardous weather bulletin Thursday morning. "A few tornadoes will also be possible."

Conditions are expected to clear up by Friday, which will have sunny skies and a high near 80. The chance of rain and thunderstorms returns again on Saturday.

The weekend will wrap up with a Sunday filled with sunshine and a high around 70, NWS said.

Here's the National Weather Service's forecast through the weekend:
Today (April 23)
Showers. Patchy fog before 10am. High near 67. South southeast wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Tonight
Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between midnight and 5am. Patchy fog between 1am and 3am. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 60. South southwest wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Friday (April 24)
Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph.
Friday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 55. Calm wind.
Saturday (April 25)
A chance of rain before noon, then a chance of showers between noon and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 54.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 70.
