Suspect Wanted For Rape, Kidnapping and Double Murder Turns Himself In

Vurnel Smith Jr. was charged with a list of crimes Tuesday, including rape, kidnapping and murder, CMPD said.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A man wanted for a gruesome double murder, rape and kidnapping has turned himself in, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Tuesday evening.

Vurnel Smith Jr., 40, surrendered to CMPD Aug. 1, five days after his ex-wife’s parents, Jacquline Gordon-White and Rufus Gordon, were found murdered.

CMPD initially responded to the 9000 block of Red Clay Lane shortly after 4:30 a.m. July 27. There they found the body of Gordon-White, who was suffering from trauma but was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics. Authorities later found Gordon’s body in the trunk of a vehicle driven to an area hospital by a female victim who called police.

Smith has been charged with two counts of murder, rape, kidnapping, assault on a female and larceny of a motor vehicle, CMPD said. He is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
