Top Children’s Hospitals In NC: U.S. News & World Report

Three children’s hospitals in North Carolina are among the best in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings.

The best children’s hospitals for 2019-20 rankings released on Tuesday feature the 50 best hospitals in 10 pediatric specialties and 10 hospitals that landed on U.S. News’ honor roll. The hospitals on the honor roll “deliver exceptionally high-quality care across multiple specialties.”

In North Carolina, three hospitals were ranked among the top 50 in nine pediatric specialties.

The North Carolina hospitals ranked for pediatric specialties are:

Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center, Durham — 9 ranked specialities

• Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery: No. 25
• Neonatology: No. 20
• Nephrology: No. 21
• Neurology & Neurosurgery: No. 46
• Orthopedics: No. 43
• Pulmonology & Lung Surgery: No. 36
• Urology: No. 26

Levine Children’s Hospital, Charlotte — 7 ranked specialities

• Cancer: No. 28
• Cardiology & Heart Surgery: No. 19
• Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery: No. 42
• Neonatology: No. 45
• Nephrology: No. 27
• Neurology & Neurosurgery: No. 36
• Orthopedics: No. 35

North Carolina Children’s Hospital at UNC, Chapel Hill — 7 ranked specialities

• Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (3)

• Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (5)
• Children’s National Medical Center (6)
• Nationwide Children’s Hospital (7)
• UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (8)
• Johns Hopkins Children’s Center (9)
• Seattle Children’s Hospital (10)

U.S. News says its methodology in tabulating the rankings takes into account measures like patient outcome, including mortality and infection rates, and also available clinical resources and compliance with best practices. (You can read more about the methodology here.)
